The American Physical Therapy Association’s recognition of Advanced Proficiency for the Physical Therapist Assistant program provides PTAs the opportunity to demonstrate to the profession and to the public achievement of advanced knowledge and skill in a particular area of physical therapy. Only one out of four PTAs in Minnesota has the credential for proficiency in geriatrics. The computer .programs also include Since May of 2009, RehabCare Group has provided therapy services to the St. John’s campus. RehabCare Group specializes in geriatric rehabilitation services and offers occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech therapy at the St. John’s campus five days a week, a rarity in most nursing homes and skilled nursing facilities. A strong therapy department is key to the success of any nursing home. Nursing homes are now places of getting strong, getting better and getting home. 50% of the people discharged from St. John’s last year either went home or to a new home such as assisted living or apartments. “Our goal is to increase or improve the individual’s independent functional ability to need less and less assistance. We are a team on behalf of the residents and clients,” stated Tracy Eustice, PTA, Therapy Program Director. Even after clients are discharged, they can continue their therapy at St. John’s. Having access to national best practices in rehabilitation services through RehabCare Group is a great asset to the St. John’s Circle of Care. Tracy welcomes community volunteers to assist with crafts, baking or other therapy projects. You can reach her at 507-723-3231. Vanna!” You might hear these familiar words as you walk through the halls of St. John’s, but they will not be coming from a television set. Instead you will see residents gathered around the screen of an It’s Never 2 Late (IN2L) computer system participating in the popular game Wheel of Fortune. The game incorporates video of the real Vanna White. The computer system is being used by the Therapeutic Recreation and Physical Therapy Departments thanks to a grant from the Pieschel Family Foundation and support from the St. John Lutheran Home Foundation. The system has been in use since April, and residents think it’s great. While watching one of many stunning travel videos a resident proclaimed, “I never knew places like that existed!” Residents are watching movies, playing games, Googling interests... and Googling themselves. Those who had no interest in computers are now the first to want to work with the programs. Residents who have difficulty with mobility are up and dancing to all the Elvis music videos on the “jukebox.” Typically the IN2L portable computer leaves the event before the attendees. Therapeutic Recreation staff are leading the way in using IN2L. Tracy Eustice, PTA of RehabCare, is excited about integrating the IN2L with traditional therapies. IN2L provides customized therapeutic software subscriptions tailored to the interests and passions of elders. The games, travel videos, music and other programing are updated every month. St. John’s has purchased a two-year subscription using grant money. The hope is that families and the community will contribute to maintain the subscription. For those we serve, having access, training, and assistance in independently using this technology enhances creativity, self-esteem and cognition. You can learn more about IN2L at in2l.com. One of the biggest successes was the completion of the Intergenerational Playground in the center of our campus, which was made possible by your support. Paradoxically, the biggest challenge we faced turned into a success story. In January, we were visited by a Federal Fire Marshal. Even though St. John Lutheran Home is a very well-kept facility, he identified over $60,000 in repairs that needed to be made quickly. I admit this was one of the most difficult periods in my career. However, as time passed, I realized that the community support we received following this time was a true blessing. As word got out, we began receiving contributions from people who wanted to help. Both St. Paul Lutheran Church and St. John’s Lutheran Church contributed several thousand dollars to help with the costs. This kind of generosity was truly humbling and got me thinking of the long history of St. John’s. The St. John Hospital was founded over 100 years ago, and for the vast majority of its history, St. John’s has relied on the support of the community to fulfill its mission. St. John’s Circle of Care is unique in that it is an independent organization. Many such organizations are merging or selling to larger corporations in order to survive. St. John’s has been successful in remaining independent largely due to the local support we receive. Currently, government funding is extremely unstable. This is why St. John’s Circle of Care continues to rely on your support. It is your generosity that will allow us to continue our mission to provide the kind of Christian care that people have come to know and expect. Blessings to you and your family this Christmas Season! As we have welcomed new tenants and said sad good-byes to some of our friends, the building has developed a friendly community where guests are welcome and tenants have a safe home. Every day brings new opportunities and experiences with an Exercise Group, Nail Care Clinic, Prayer Group, Saturday BINGO and regular visits from St. John’s GrandKids. We’ve enjoyed family gatherings for holidays, birthdays and anniversaries, and we’ve welcomed a monthly card club and some civic organizations for their meetings. Periodic Open House events have offered live music, speakers and programs. On Memorial Day, we hosted our neighbors at Cottonwood Ridge at a picnic complete with live entertainment. Soon “Movies and Snacks” in our new Theater Area will be available, and “Hands in Service” will provide opportunities for tenants and friends to help make gifts for others. Please visit your friends, participate in an event or join us for a meal as you check out the currently available apartments with aroundthe- clock skilled and caring assistance. (Very Important Kids) Club has received a $25,000 First Children’s Finance grant. First Children’s Finance is dedicated to improving the quality and financial viability of child care and early childhood education businesses. St. John’s was one of seven child care centers in Minnesota chosen to receive this grant in 2009. The GrandKids and V.I.K. programs are a vital part of the St. John’s Circle of Care. Each day the children in these programs make station visits throughout the nursing home. They are frequent guests at The Maples where, together with tenants, they do craft projects, sing and dance or even taste green eggs and ham. Studies have shown that elders involved in intergenerational activities report feeling happy, loved, interested, younger and needed. Children in intergenerational child care settings have advanced social skills compared to children in traditional day care. They also learn to be comfortable around older adults and people of varying abilities. This year the Family Picnic received support from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota Foundation “Healthy Together” program which supports efforts of welcoming and hospitality to those in our communities. St. John Lutheran Home Foundation also contributed. Because of this combined funding, all members of the campus were invited to join in the fun and to enjoy the entertainment.
